Introduction
On 20th of February 2023, ASI members took a field visit to Buikwe district to assess the issue of teenage pregnancy that escalated during and after the Covid19 lockdown. The team reached Buikwe and interacted with different groups of teenage mothers and heard their views on what they dream their future would look like.
Objective:
The main purpose of this field visit was to get to meet some of these teenage mothers, get to know how they are faring, how they would like to be helped and also let them know about African Soul Initiative together with our project proposal that is to help them forge a way to better their lives. These teenage mothers were briefed on what the project entails which include training them in vocational skills, counselling/guidance, health care and also providing bursaries for those who want to further their school education.
Observation:
Within the visit, we met two groups of teenage mothers totaling to 21. Group 1 at Kisimba Umea primary school which included 7 girls and group 2 with 14 girls at St Boniface primary school. These girls are all below 19years and are under the care of their struggling families. On talking to some of them, the main reason as to why they were now teenage mothers is because of poverty which forced them to engage in early sex so as to provide for themselves and the families.
Most of the girls are still looking forward to furthering their education through the school program while others are for vocational skills.
We also interacted with school leaders who upon getting what our visit was all about welcomed us fully and offered to walk with us in this project and also communicate with other teenage mothers to come on board so as they use the opportunity to transform their lives. We also had a word with the local VHT who coordinated in getting the teenage mothers.
We managed to visit five (5) schools which included Kisimba Umea primary school, Kiyindi community primary school, Kiyindi Moslem primary school, St Boniface primary school and also Vuluga Umea primary school.
Conclusion
The field visit was a success and we believe that once the project gets implemented, it will help lots of teenage mothers in restoring hope that there’s a bright future for them.
